The renewed curfew took effect on Monday, June 9, 2025
The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, has announced the review of curfew hours in Walewale and its environs in the North East Region of Ghana.
According to a statement released by the Minister for the Interior on June 9, 2025, the review follows recommendations from the North East Regional Security Council and backed by an Executive Instrument.
The renewed curfew took effect on Monday, June 9, 2025, and will cover the hours of 10:00 pm to 4:00 am.
“The Minister for the Interior, on the advice of the North East Regional Security Council and by Executive Instrument, has renewed the curfew hours on Walewale and its environs in the North East Region from 10:00 pm to 4:00 am, effective Monday, June 9, 2025,” part of the statement read.
The statement from the ministry urged chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, youth, and residents to remain calm and prioritise non-violent solutions in their effort to maintain peace in the area.
In another breadth, the government has placed a total ban on the possession of arms, ammunition, and any dangerous weapons in Walewale and its surrounding areas.
Anyone found carrying such items will be arrested and prosecuted.
It would be recalled that in April, some irate youth in Walewale vandalised the vehicle of the North East Regional Minister, Tia Ibrahim, during a violent attack, leading to damage of properties and injuring persons.
The riot, which stemmed from their discontent over the government’s imposition of a curfew in the region, was brought under control after the timely intervention of the military.
In their estimation, the curfew does not address the real issues of insecurity and crime along the Bawku, Bolga, Walewale, and Tamale highways.
Instead, they believe it may deepen tensions and further disconnect the government from the people.
Meanwhile, concerns have been raised about the presence of military personnel in Walewale, with reports of alleged brutality.
Some citizens claimed the confrontations resulted in one casualty, while several were hospitalised for varying degrees of injury.
