General Manager of Citi FM and Channel One TV, Bernard Avle, has encouraged young journalists to stay true to the core values of journalism amidst the rapidly changing media landscape.
He shared these thoughts during the retirement ceremony of Dr. Alhaji Siddick Abubakar, Former Station Manager of Radio Univers.
It was an evening of elegance and tribute at the University of Ghana’s Great Hall, where media veterans, legal minds, business leaders, and well-wishers gathered to honour Dr. Alhaji Siddick Abubakar as he retired from his role as Station Manager of Radio Univers.
The ceremony celebrated more than three decades of his dedicated service, during which he played a pivotal role in shaping the careers of some of Ghana’s most respected journalists.
Among those he mentored are Bernard Avle, Bola Ray, Kafui Dey, Caleb Kudah, and Giovanni Caleb.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Abubakar urged the University’s leadership to invest in modernising campus media platforms to keep pace with evolving journalistic trends.
“In an era driven by mobile journalism, data analytics and immersive storytelling, the station must evolve beyond traditional format, equipping students with practical skills to bridge the divide between theory and industry demands,” he said.
Dr. Abubakar affirmed that Radio Univers will remain a standard-bearer in journalism by strengthening collaborations with key institutions and promoting journalistic values through mentorship.
Former volunteers of Radio Univers reminisced about their time at the station, sharing heartfelt stories of Dr. Abubakar’s leadership and lasting impact.
“He is a man I will want to call an institution. A lot of people have been under his tutelage someway somehow, and we all see the results. He is a great man, and he needs to be celebrated,” Media Personality, Giovanni Caleb, told Channel One News.
Bernard Avle also spoke at the event, urging aspiring journalists to uphold the timeless principles of truth, accuracy, and accountability as they chart their paths in today’s dynamic media space.
“We are in an era of social media, but Radio Univers still stands. It has been quite resilient, and the objectivity, the hard work. Most people who work in media will say if you hire someone from Radio Univers, you will notice that they sacrifice, they are not about the money, they are not about the fame, but they are interested in getting the work done,” he said.
