Accra, June 7, GNA – Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on Ghanaians to support the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, introduced by the Government.
He described the initiative as a valuable opportunity for citizens to unite in gratitude to God for His blessings.
“And you identify one of the most important things—stability, the unity of our country and its stability. Our country is the only one in West Africa, one of the few on the continent that has never had a civil war. We must give thanks to God,” he said.
Nana Akufo-Addo made the remarks when the Planning Committee of the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving paid a courtesy call at his residence in Accra to introduce themselves and formally invite him to the national event.
The National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, now recognised as National Thanksgiving Day on July 1, aims to bring together Christians, Muslims, and other religious groups under the theme: “Reflect, Reset, and Renew for National Prosperity.”
The Christian segment of the programme will take place at the forecourt of the State House from 0800 to 1000 hours, followed by Muslim prayers at the National Mosque from 1230 to 1400 hours.
Nana Akufo-Addo said while the nation has faced challenges and differences, it has never deviated from its course or descended into conflict over power, stressing that this stability is a profound blessing.
“We are now in the Fourth Republic, during which we have successfully experienced four peaceful transitions of government,” he stated.
“The events of December last year further affirm that peaceful transfers of power through popular consultation have become an integral part of our national culture.”
He commended the President for introducing the initiative, describing it as a worthwhile national effort.
He also praised the planning committee for their dedication to the assignment.
“It’s all in the interest of our country, and I think it’s a worthwhile initiative. I believe all well-meaning Ghanaians, who are the overwhelming majority, will embrace this initiative as a positive development for the nation,” he stressed.
Mr. Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, Chairman of the Planning Committee, said the committee had been visiting former and current national leaders to seek their guidance and support for the upcoming national celebration.
“Having been President for eight years, Former President Akufo-Addo commended and endorsed us, which shows that we are on the right trajectory,” he added.
He advised participants to avoid wearing political party colours, encouraging them instead to dress in national colours, all-white outfits, or other appropriate celebratory attire.
