The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced plans to stage a demonstration in response to the recent approval of the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, June 4, NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye stated that the party, in collaboration with other political groups, will hit the streets of Kumasi to protest the levy, which he labelled a “wicked” and “obnoxious” tax.

The bill, which includes a GH¢1 fuel levy, was passed by Parliament on Tuesday, June 3, despite a walkout by the Minority Caucus, who criticised it as an added financial strain on Ghanaians.

The bill is intended to raise additional revenue to address the nation’s crippling energy sector debt and ensure stable power supply.

The Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, who laid the bill under a certificate of urgency, stated that the energy sector’s total indebtedness stands at US$3.1 billion as of March 2025.
