Ama Pratt calls for collective action to empower Zongo girls at Obaasima Summit

Press Secretary at the Office of the Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of the Obaasima Foundation, Ama Pratt, has called for collective action to tackle social challenges facing young women in Zongo communities.

Speaking at the Obaasima Zongo Girls Summit on Tuesday, June 3, Pratt highlighted issues such as teenage pregnancy and early marriage, which tend to hinder young women from achieving their goals.

She urged young women to break through these barriers and pursue their dreams, stressing the need for strong community support to drive meaningful change.

“This conversation is for that Zongo perspective, to ensure that whatever barriers there are that I’m constantly hearing about, the women who have lived through these barriers and have excelled will come and share their experience and share their knowledge with the younger Zongo girl so that all of us can achieve together.

“So my prayer is that, at the end of the dialogue, if the ladies have some questions on their minds and hearts for a long time, these women can help and assist them. So for me, it’s about what you can do with your circumstances, regardless of what those circumstances might be,” she advised.

The Deputy Women’s Organiser for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dzifa Tegah, speaking on the theme, “Reimagining the future of today’s woman”, called for a shift away from discussions surrounding affirmative action law, toward campaigning for new initiatives that benefit women.

“Thirty years ago, sending your girl child to school was a priority because females were home, and the men were being taken to school. Today, it has reduced significantly, so we can’t go with the same campaign again. We have to aspire for higher things, better things.

“Affirmative action, how many years was it in Parliament? Today, it’s no longer our problem. It is time to reimagine the future for today’s women. That means that the campaign has indeed worked. That is why it is important that, yet again, we have to sit down and put together something to think about today. An agenda to push again”, she added.
