Ade Coker was politically civilised

Ibrahim Adjei, former Assistant Secretary to ex-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has paid glowing tribute to the late former Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Joseph Ade Coker, describing him as a “politically civilised” man who upheld decency in Ghana’s political discourse.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, July 2,  Adjei expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased, the NDC, and the broader political community.

“My sincere condolences to his family and loved ones, and to the NDC and Ghanaian politicians as a whole. I have been on programmes with him for over 20 years. On those platforms, he always conducted his politics in a civil and principled manner. He stood his ground, and we would debate the issues, but when the cameras were off, we were brothers.”

Describing Ade Coker as a man of integrity and mutual respect, Adjei reflected on the late politician’s ability to engage in fierce political debate without allowing partisan differences to define personal relationships.

“He is a good name. We pray that the Almighty God will receive him well,” he added.

Citi News confirmed over the weekend that Joseph Ade Coker passed away on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at the Bank Hospital after a short illness. While the cause of death has not been officially disclosed, sources close to the family indicate that it followed a brief health complication.

Ade Coker was widely respected within the NDC and beyond for his bold political stance and consistent presence in national debates. First elected as the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the NDC in 2009, he held the position for three consecutive terms until 2022, when he lost his re-election bid to Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore.

Beyond politics, Mr. Coker also made notable contributions to sports administration, having served as Vice Chairman of the Ghana Football Association.
