A new wave of controversy has gripped Ghana’s political and media landscape following explosive allegations made by Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye.
In a fiery interview aired on Wontumi TV, Abronye claimed that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) paid $50,000 to respected journalist Samson Lardy Anyenini in an alleged scheme to publicly embarrass Rev. Ntim Fordjour during a recent appearance on Joy News’ flagship political talk show, Newsfile.
According to Abronye, the payment was made just a day before the programme aired. He alleged that the entire segment featuring Fordjour—who previously served as Deputy Minister of Education—was a calculated attempt by the NDC to orchestrate a media ambush aimed at tarnishing his reputation.
“The NDC’s intention was not merely political theatre,” Abronye asserted. “They wanted to destroy the credibility of a rising NPP figure. This is part of their larger strategy to manipulate media spaces and mislead the public.”
The allegation has generated significant attention on social media and across political circles, with supporters and critics of both parties weighing in. However, neither Samson Lardy Anyenini nor Joy News has issued a public response to the claims. The NDC has also remained silent, offering no official comment on the matter as of press time.
Despite the sensational nature of the allegations, many observers have expressed skepticism. Prominent media analysts and press freedom advocates have dismissed Abronye’s comments as unverified and potentially harmful, warning against what they describe as a growing trend of politicized attacks on journalists.
“Allegations like these, when made without evidence, threaten the foundations of responsible journalism and democratic discourse,” said one media watchdog in Accra.
The incident adds fuel to an already tense political climate in Ghana, as parties gear up for upcoming electoral contests. Public calls for concrete evidence continue to grow, with many urging political actors to refrain from using unproven claims to undermine media credibility or distract from substantive national issues.
For now, the nation watches closely, awaiting responses from the key figures involved—and perhaps, further revelations in what is becoming yet another flashpoint in Ghana’s dynamic political arena.
