Ghanaian sprinter Abdul-Rasheed Saminu has etched his name into athletics history by breaking the national 100-metre record at the NCAA East Preliminary Round on Friday.
Clocking a blistering 9.86 seconds, Saminu not only set a new national benchmark but also emerged as the fastest man in the world so far this year.
The 27-year-old’s performance surpasses the previous national record of 9.90 seconds set by Benjamin Azamati in March 2021, establishing him as a leading contender for the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. His winning time also comfortably meets the qualification standard for the global event.
Saminu, who is currently studying at the University of South Florida, continues to impress on the international stage. His recent feat represents a personal best and consolidates his growing reputation as one of Ghana’s most promising track athletes.
“This is a huge moment for me and for Ghana,” Saminu said after the race. “Breaking the national record and becoming the world’s fastest this year is a dream come true, but I know there’s more work to be done.”
In addition to his individual exploits, Saminu is a vital part of Ghana’s 4×100-metre relay team, which has also secured a spot at the World Championships. His versatility and explosive speed make him one of Ghana’s brightest medal prospects on the international scene.
Saminu previously represented Ghana at the Paris Olympics, where he advanced to the semi-finals of the men’s 100m, gaining valuable experience on the world stage. With his current form, expectations are high as he heads to Tokyo aiming for a podium finish.
