Popular Yoruba actor Tunde Usman, widely known by his stage name Okele, has opened up about the challenges he faced in the early stages of his life and career.
In an interview shared on the official YouTube channel of Behind the Fame – African A-List, the actor recounted how his passion for drama clashed with his family’s expectations.
“Film and stage is something I really love,” Okele began. “It is because I’m from Ilorin, Kwara State. Back in the day when we were in school, we were often asked to contribute money for school drama activities. In the era of Baba Salah, if I hear that they want to come, I will collect money for drama.”
He explained how this early exposure to stage performance influenced his journey into the entertainment industry.
However, the path was far from smooth. After moving to Lagos to live with his mother, Okele found himself at odds with his family’s religious values.
“My mom wasn’t around and we went to Arabic school since I’m from a Muslim family. I’m a Muslim too but when my family went straight, I took a different path and that path brought problem,” he said.
Despite the obstacles, Okele remained committed to his craft, eventually carving out a successful career in Yoruba cinema.
