The Member of Parliament for Korley Klottey, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, has spoken against the rampant environmental destruction fueled by mineral exploitation in Ghana.

The daughter of the late President Jerry John Rawlings is particularly concerned about the uncontrolled methods used for mineral extraction.

Dr Rawlings took to LinkedIn on May 28, 2025, to advocate for a more comprehensive discussion on the widespread degradation of Ghana’s land and water bodies.

She challenged stakeholders in the mineral extraction space and citizens with poignant questions, seeking answers to why the country cannot shift its focus from exploiting finite natural resources.

“Is it every single, finite, natural resource that must be exploited? Is the irreparable damage to the environment worth the short-term benefit that is often enjoyed by a few? As a nation, should we not have a conversation about what we should leave sacred and untouched?” she asked

Her remarks are especially timely given the ongoing devastation caused by illegal mining.

This activity has destroyed major water sources and vital forest reserves, creating environmental crises.
