Wontumi not on hunger strike – Lawyer clarifies

The lawyer for Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako—popularly known as Chairman Wontumi—has dismissed reports that his client is on a hunger strike while in detention.

Speaking to the media, Andy Appiah-Kubi clarified that Wontumi remains in the custody of the Economic and Organised Office (EOCO) and is receiving medical attention at a clinic. He acknowledged that Wontumi has experienced health challenges since his detention began, but rejected claims that he is refusing food.

This clarification follows an earlier assertion by Minority Chief Whip and MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, who alleged that Wontumi was on a hunger strike in protest of his detention conditions. Annoh-Dompreh described the situation as “shocking” and expressed concern over the absence of official updates on Wontumi’s wellbeing.

Appiah-Kubi firmly refuted the claim, revealing that he had recently shared a meal with his client.

“Two days ago in the evening [Wednesday, May 28], I had dinner with him. I’m going to see him now at EOCO. After that, he will respond whether this happened today or yesterday,” he stated.

Chairman Wontumi is currently under investigation for alleged fraud, money laundering, and other financial crimes linked to the Ghana Export-Import Bank (EXIM Bank). Although EOCO has granted him bail set at GH¢50 million with two justified sureties, his legal team has so far secured only one, resulting in his continued detention.
