Dr UN presenting the golden plate to Chairman Wontumi
A resurfaced video capturing the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Chairman Wontumi, receiving an award from Dr UN has sparked massive reactions online.
The video, which has found its way back to social media trends, dates back to 2020.
In it, Dr UN, a self-styled event organizer, was seen presenting Chairman Wontumi with a symbolic “golden plate” dubbed the Kofi Annan Award, in recognition of his alleged outstanding humanitarian contributions.
Dr UN praised Wontumi for his dedication to the NPP and Ghanaian politics, lauding him for his “hard work and perseverance.”
Chairman Wontumi, visibly elated, accepted the award with a heartfelt message:
“I am very humbled to receive this award. I am too happy and I don’t know how to say it. I receive this award for my family, party, friends, and nation. I promise also to work hard… May God bless you and bless the UN.
“I am very happy at the moment but now I know that it doesn’t matter if you have a certificate or not. If you work hard, God will have a favor on you, and when the promotion comes, nobody can stop you.”
Dr UN, whose controversial award schemes have made headlines in the past, also crowned Wontumi with a ceremonial sash.
He emphasised that the gesture was a testament to Wontumi’s unique contributions and legacy:
“This is your medal to tell you that you are a winner and that what the people are saying about you as Chairman Wontumi is true. You are the only person that has received four awards, it hasn’t happened before. The sash crowns you the Gold Star Excellence from the United Nations.”
The video’s re-emergence has since led to a wave of reactions on social media, with netizens mocking both the ceremony and its symbolism, given Dr UN’s history of self-created award schemes.
Ongoing Legal Troubles
Meanwhile, Chairman Wontumi is currently embroiled in serious legal battles.
He is under investigation for multiple offences, including fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.
Although he has been granted bail set at GH¢50 million, his legal team is yet to satisfy the conditions required for his release. The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO)’s decision to keep him in custody has stirred political debate, particularly among NPP Minority Members of Parliament, who claim the detention is politically motivated.
