Energy Ministry announces resumption of Tulow and Eni offshore drilling operations

Tullow Oil and Eni resumes offshore drilling activities Tullow Oil and Eni resumes offshore drilling activities

The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has officially announced the resumption of offshore drilling activities by Tullow Ghana Ltd and its Jubilee partners, as well as Eni Ghana and its Offshore Cape Three Points (OCTP) partners.

This follows the official approval of their respective drilling programmes by the ministry and the Petroleum Commission aimed at revitalising Ghana’s upstream petroleum after a prolonged period of reduced activity.

In a statement released on Thursday, May 29, 2025, as sighted by GhanaWeb Business, the ministry said the development signals renewed investor confidence in Ghana’s upstream petroleum sector.

“The new drilling campaigns by Eni and the recently commenced operations by Jubilee partners will sustain oil production and improve operational efficiency in the two fields. The restart of drilling activities and the renewed investment phase demonstrate confidence in the government’s new direction and Ghana’s energy future,” the statement said.

According to the ministry, Tullow Ghana has contracted the Noble Venturer Drillship, which is already stationed in Ghana’s waters, to drill the JBE-P well in the Jubilee South-East area.

The well, classified as a Jubilee Full Field Development oil producer, is expected to be completed within 60 days, with an initial production rate of 2,800 barrels of oil per day (bopd) in the third quarter of 2025, ramping up to 4,500 bopd in 2026.

Meanwhile, Eni Ghana has initiated its new drilling campaign with the SNKE-1X ST2 well, targeting an area of the Cenomanian reservoir in the Sankofa field.

The well is anticipated to positively impact oil production over several years, beginning in the fourth quarter of 2025.

In preparation for the new drilling initiatives, Tullow and Eni, in collaboration with the Petroleum Commission and other relevant agencies, have engaged in comprehensive stakeholder outreach along Ghana’s coastline.

The effort has involved around 1,000 fishermen and local leaders, fostering open communication and collaboration with coastal communities.
