Ghana to exit IMF program in 2026 – President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Ghana plans to exit the current International Monetary Fund (IMF) program by 2026.

According to the President, his government is working diligently to meet all the targets set by the IMF, aiming to conclude the three-year Extended Credit Facility (ECF) arrangement on schedule.

Speaking at the 9th Ghana CEO Summit in Accra on May 26, 2025, under the theme “Leading Ghana’s Economic Reset: Governance for a Sustainable Futuristic Economy,” President Mahama expressed optimism that the fourth review of the program, scheduled for June, will be successful.

Ghana entered into a $3 billion IMF-supported bailout in 2023 following a severe macroeconomic crisis marked by unsustainable debt levels, rapid cedi depreciation, soaring inflation, and a loss of access to international capital markets.

The agreement was designed to restore macroeconomic stability, ensure debt sustainability, and lay the foundation for inclusive growth.

So far, the economy is showing signs of recovery, with inflation gradually declining, the cedi stabilising, and investor confidence on the rise.

President Mahama stated that, following Ghana’s exit from the IMF program in 2026, the government will “reopen international and domestic capital markets” to support long-term growth and development financing.

He further noted that the country will leverage current favorable trends in global commodity markets, particularly rising gold and cocoa prices, to shore up foreign exchange reserves and build fiscal buffers against external shocks.
