Wontumi’s Lawyer slams security operation as “immature” and wasteful

The lawyer for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako—popularly known as Chairman Wontumi—has sharply criticised the security operation carried out at his client’s residence, describing it as “immature” and unnecessary.

Kwame Adom-Appiah, who also serves as the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Secretary, questioned the conduct of the joint team of National Security operatives and Police officers who stormed Chairman Wontumi’s Kumasi residence on Friday, May 23, 2025.

Speaking to the media at the scene, Adom-Appiah condemned the scale and method of the operation, calling it excessive and a misuse of state resources.

“When you are going to arrest somebody, and you go with about 20 cars when the person is not a coup maker and has not intended to overthrow this government, I do not think it was useful,” he said. “Bringing about 20 cars is undesirable for this country and a cost to the state.

“You could have extended a common invitation to the person. Even if he failed to respond to that, there are proper ways to effect an arrest.”

The raid has heightened tensions in the area, with residents and onlookers visibly unsettled. A heavy security presence remains around the premises, although it is still unclear whether Chairman Wontumi is inside or what prompted the operation.

Channel One TV’s Hafiz Tijani, reporting from the scene, noted that the area remains on edge as heavily armed officers continue to guard the compound.
