Former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Dame, has mounted a strong defense for his representation of suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo in her application, challenging her suspension and the ongoing hearing on three petitions for her removal.
Speaking in an interview on JoyNews on May 21, 2025, Dame refuted claims that his representation of Justice Torkornoo has politicised the ongoing proceedings on the petitions for Justice Torkornoo’s removal.
He asserted that it is rather the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) that has politicised the process.
He claimed that all the lawyers representing the three petitioners are known affiliates of the NDC.
“If there is any group of people who have politicised this process, it is the NDC government. Look at the band of lawyers representing the petitioners. Mr Tsatsu Tsikata, Mr Thaddeus Sory, a lawyer who has more record of representing all NDC figures in the past eight years and who is very much associated with the NDC, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, a young man who recently rose to popularity on account of all kinds of attacks against the NPP government and who is very much registered with the NDC, worked with President Mahama in his office and all that. These are people who are prosecuting the Chief Justice,” he said.
The former Attorney General further stated that his record of defending the judiciary is unmatched.
“And I feel it is about time that good men in this country stood for what is righteous and what is right. As far as I’m concerned, if there’s any Attorney General who right from his appointment, has stood up for the judiciary and has spoken against attacks on the judiciary, it is me,” he said.
