The wife of New Patriotic Party (NPP) member Alfred Ababio Kumi has reportedly suffered a miscarriage following his arrest in the early hours of Friday, May 23, 2025.
Kumi’s mother, Nana Ama Owusu, disclosed the incident during an interview on , adding that he has since been hospitalised.
According to Nana Ama, her daughter-in-law was four months pregnant, and the family is devastated by the loss.
She recounted that at around 5:30 a.m., about eight armed men stormed her son’s house. The raid followed Kumi’s public comments on the controversy surrounding the potential removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
“Two men said they were from the CID and I told them they could speak with me, but one just pushed me aside. Only one wore a police uniform; the rest were in plain clothes. They forced their way into my room,” she recalled.
She narrated that the armed men struck the gate with the butts of their rifles in an attempt to enter the house.
“Kumi’s wife rushed to see what was happening, but upon seeing the security operatives, she panicked and struggled to open the gate. One of them ordered a shot to be fired. While running away, she fell and began bleeding profusely,” she said.
The distressed mother added that the family’s pleas to accompany the security officers were ignored. They were later informed that Kumi had been taken into custody at the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).
The arrest follows Kumi’s recent petition to President John Mahama, in which he called for the dissolution of the committee investigating the possible removal of the Chief Justice.
In his petition, Kumi alleged misconduct involving members of the committee.
He claimed that on May 15, 2025, following the committee’s inaugural sitting, Justices Gabriel Scott Pwamang and Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu—both members of the committee—and Supreme Court Justice Yonny Kulendi were seen dining at Santoku Restaurant with Thaddeus Sory, counsel for petitioner Daniel Ofori.
Kumi alleged the group was overheard discussing matters related to the petition. It is believed that the arrest is linked to this allegation.
