The New Juaben South Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Ransford Owusu Boakye, has announced the assembly’s plan to adopt pragmatic measures to address the recurring flooding and poor sanitation in Koforidua, the Eastern Regional capital.
As part of the initiative, the MCE has disclosed the temporary closure of all shops and market centres on Saturday, May 24, 2025, from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., to allow for a citywide communal labour exercise. Transport operators have also been directed to suspend operations until the clean-up is over.
Speaking to journalists shortly after assuming office, Mr. Boakye pledged his commitment to tackling the sanitation and drainage issues that have plagued the municipality.
“We are starting with communal labour this weekend. My information officer and his team have already informed the people. Let me use this opportunity to tell residents to make themselves available and ensure we all participate fully this Saturday.
“No one is going to the market that day, we are all going to be on the field. We are starting at 7 and will end at 10. After the exercise, you can go back to your work,” he urged.
In addition to sanitation efforts, Mr. Boakye toured some stalled road construction projects within the municipality. He assured residents of Abogri and Zongo communities that he is committed to fixing their poor road networks.
“I am going to look at what is in the pipeline to decide how to go about it, especially the Zongo ones, it has been there for a long time. Maybe in about a month, we should be able to speak to this issue,” he said.
