The Member of Parliament for Chiana-Paga, Nikyema Billa Alamzy, has rebuked the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what he terms their overreliance on petitions and press briefings in responding to the Mahama government’s policies.
According to Ghana Web, In a GHOne TV interview on May 19, 2025, Billa Alamzy argued that the opposition’s strategy is both repetitive and counterproductive, warning that it risks deeper losses than those suffered in the 2024 elections.
He noted that the NPP appears quick to flaunt petitions and stage media events at every opportunity, rather than concentrating on internal reform and voter engagement.
“If you’re not petitioning, you’re holding press conferences instead of focusing on rebuilding your party,” he said, suggesting that this cycle does little to galvanize support at the grassroots.
Billa Alamzy cautioned that persistence with this tactic could lead to a scenario where “by 2028, your petitions and press conferences might outnumber the votes you receive,” underscoring his belief that the current government has steered the country effectively.
His remarks shows a broader concern that the NPP has neglected substantive policy debate and constructive criticism in favour of sensational media activity.
He challenged the party to adopt a more substantive role in Parliament, encouraging it to hold the government to account through well-researched legislative proposals rather than sensational allegations.
Pointing to recent claims about alleged financial inducements by the opposition’s own spokesperson, Sammy Gyamfi, he questioned the efficacy of pursuing such matters in public forums: “What crime has been committed?”
Billa Alamzy concluded by urging the NPP to recalibrate its approach: cease the parade of petitions and press conferences, pursue genuine organisational renewal, and engage voters with concrete ideas rather than headlines.
