A viral screenshot of a WhatsApp group chat, has caught an NPP member of Parliament for Mpraeso Constituency in the Eastern Region, Davis Opoku Ansah, in a distasteful hate campaign against former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
The MP, identified by the initials OPK in the chat group, launched the unfortunate tribal campaign against Dr. Bawumia when he rejected a call for the return of Dr. Bawumia as Flagbearer of the NPP for 2028, on the basis that a northerner cannot succeed another as President.
“You say Flagbearer? The current president, JM, is from the north and you want Ghanaians to elect another northerner in 2028?, ” the MP wrote.
His tribal tangent attracted criticism from members of the WhatsApp platform, who rejected the introduction of tribalism and divisiveness in the NPP, and generally Ghanaian politics.
A member of the group rejected the MP’s “dangerous tribalism” and presented historical antecedents of former Ghanaian leaders to show that by 2028, Ghana would be 71 years post independence and out of that, a northerner would have been President or Head of State for just 10 years out of the 71 years; adding that by 2028, a northerner would have been President for 8 years out of 36 years in the 4th Republic.
On this basis, OPK’s tribal campaign was rejected by many members of the group and “baseless and divisive,” with a caution to him and other tribal bigots to avoid such divisive campaign.
