Adentan MP urges bold, non-partisan action on flooding crisis

Member of Parliament for Adentan, Mohammed Adamu Ramadan, has called for a non-partisan approach to addressing Ghana’s persistent flooding issues.

His remarks follow the devastating floods that occurred on Sunday, May 18, 2025, which caused significant property damage and reportedly claimed at least three lives within the Adentan area.

Speaking to Citi News during an assessment tour of the affected communities on Monday, May 19, Ramadan expressed support for government plans to demolish illegal structures built on waterways and called for firm and decisive action to prevent future disasters.

“It is disheartening. I think that we must be intentional and deliberate as a country if we want to end this,” he said. “The issues are self-inflicted. You find people building on waterways, and when it’s demolished, it becomes a problem. I think we have to be firm and intentional if we want to end this.”

He further urged the government to make tough decisions, even if they are unpopular, for the greater long-term benefit.

“I get the sense that H.E. President John Dramani Mahama wants to reset the economy. Every decision has a consequence and collateral damage. If we have to make a difficult and hard decision, we have to make it now.

“If in 2026 the rains come and we don’t experience flooding, I think people will begin to appreciate what we have done. We don’t have to wait until an election year to take action.”

Ramadan concluded by emphasizing the need for courage in leadership: “I will urge the government to be bold and take very hard decisions. Lives can’t be lost consistently because of flooding.”
