The unexpected death of highlife maestro Dada Kwaku Duah, also known as Dada KD, at the Gbawe SDA Hospital in Accra on Friday, May 16, rocked Ghana’s music scene.

The 56-year-old musician, who is well-known for classic love ballads like “Odo Mu Anigye,” “Somgye,” and “Ebeboawo,” was admitted after becoming mute due to a medical issue.

A few hours later, he disappeared despite the efforts of the medical staff. Dada KD won the Ghana Music Awards UK’s Best Male Vocal Artist title in 2004 thanks to his rich, soulful voice, and he’s still going strong with plans to tour the UK later this month.

He had forebodingly foreseen his own death in 2020, writing on social media that he would soon “join” his deceased colleagues Bishop Bernard Nyarko and Kofi B. This was a terrible echo of fate.

His passing sparked a wave of condolences and remembrance throughout Ghana’s music scene. While entertainment star Ayisha Modi considered Dada KD’s lasting impact, pointing out that his music had transcended generations and genres, gospel powerhouse Empress Gifty mourned the passing of a “icon whose melodies lifted our spirits.”

His legacy of poignant lyrics and uplifting songs will live on in the hearts of admirers everywhere as the country copes with the death of one of its highlife icons.
