The Service Commanders of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have demonstrated profound compassion, donating their one-month basic salary to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, widely known as ‘Mahama Cares’.
The fund specifically targets illnesses like cancer, cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney failure, and stroke, among others.
Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier General William Agyapong, articulated the motivation behind the gesture, stating on behalf of the commanders: “We are intrigued, and it is heartwarming to know that persons with conditions such as cancers… will equally benefit from this fund. Your Excellency, that is why my military command and I have decided to contribute our one-month basic salary.”
Receiving the unexpected donation, President John Dramani Mahama, the driving force behind the Mahama Cares initiative, expressed heartfelt appreciation.
He praised the Armed Forces’ display of patriotism and compassion, noting, “It shows that aside from your primary responsibility of protecting our territorial boundaries and wielding weapons, you have a heart and soul beating in your chest.”
President Mahama concluded by thanking the military leadership on behalf of all Ghanaians for their selfless contribution towards alleviating the suffering of the nation’s most medically vulnerable.
