Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Chairman Wontumi, is once again making headlines with his generous financial gestures.
According to MyNewsGH, Recently, he revealed that he funded all the forms for polling station, constituency, and regional elections in 2014, 2018, and 2022, even covering the costs for his opponents in the Ashanti region.
“I paid for all polling station, constituency, and regional forms… even for my opponent,” he stated in an interview on Wontumi TV.
While his supporters see this as a testament to his loyalty and dedication to the party, the gesture has also raised concerns about the growing role of money in party politics.
Some are questioning whether such large financial contributions create a disproportionate influence over party decisions, especially within the grassroots level.
Chairman Wontumi went on to recall his other contributions, including funding the NPP’s 2015 Tamale congress to the tune of one billion old cedis and distributing school supplies nationwide during the party’s time in opposition.
However, he was quick to clarify that his actions were not motivated by any desire for government positions: “I’ve never held any government position. I’ve done it all from my own resources.”
