Trader faces court for injuring carpenter’s eye in ₵200 dispute

A trader who allegedly thrust his walking stick into a carpenter’s left eye has appeared before an Accra Circuit Court.

Adam Zakaria, 42, is said to have paid GH₵200 to the carpenter, Eric Djan, to fix a leaking roof, but Djan allegedly failed to complete the work.

Zakaria, who has been charged with causing harm, pleaded not guilty.

Presiding Judge Isaac Addo granted him GH₵50,000 bail with two sureties and ordered the prosecution to comply with disclosure requirements.

According to Chief Inspector Jonas Lawer, Djan, a resident of Danquah Circle, Osu, received payment from Zakaria in October 2024 but did not repair the leak.

On January 20, 2025, Zakaria confronted Djan at Danquah Roundabout regarding the delay.

Djan explained that he had been unwell and was unable to complete the job.

“This resulted in a quarrel between the two, and in the process, the accused allegedly thrust his walking stick into the complainant’s left eye,” the prosecution stated.

Djan, who was bleeding profusely, was rushed to the Police Hospital, where doctors found that his vision had become blurred and recommended surgery.

Zakaria was arrested on May 8, 2025.
