A recent video circulating on social media shows a food vendor expressing her thanks to former President John Dramani Mahama for what she calls a considerable reduction in food prices. Holding a tuber of yam, the woman passionately congratulated Mahama, whom she referred to as her “saviour,” and attributed the price decline to the Ghana cedi’s recent rise versus major international currencies.
The vendor previously bought a gallon of cooking oil for GH¢1,000, but the price has suddenly dropped to GH¢680, a significant GH¢320 savings. A bag of rice now costs GH¢380, down from its previous price of GH¢500. Despite a reported yam shortage in the market, she managed to buy a tuber for GH¢40, further feeding her adoration for the former President.
The cedi’s strengthening, particularly against the US dollar, is thought to be helping to lower pricing for imported products and food. As of May 10, 2025, the cedi is selling at GH¢13.40 to the dollar at retail bureaus, while the pound and euro trade at GH¢18.50 and GH¢15.80, respectively.
The video elicited varied comments on social media, with some welcoming the price cut and others questioning Mahama’s political credit.
