UNICEF Country Director commends Ghana for child rights efforts

UNICEF Ghana Representative, Mr. Osama Makkawi Khogali, has paid a courtesy visit to the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak.

He commended the Government of Ghana for its commitment to child rights.

He also lauded Ghana for being the first country to ratify the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) in 1990, a testament to its dedication to protecting the welfare of children.

Mr. Osama Makkawi Khogali reaffirmed UNICEF’s commitment to supporting the Ministry of the Interior in its efforts to promote child rights and welfare.

He praised Ghana for being a driving force in enforcing child rights, citing the country’s proactive approach to ensuring the well-being of children.

A statement issued by the Interior Ministry after the visit said that Alhaji Muntaka highlighted some of the initiatives being implemented by the Ministry, including child rights policing, which, according to him, has been incorporated into the training curriculum for police officers. This initiative aims to equip law enforcement officers with the knowledge and skills necessary to handle child-related cases effectively.

According to the statement, the Minister also mentioned Government’s plans to strengthen the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) to enable it to do more in supporting victims of child abuse and exploitation.

He also stated that new police stations being built are designed with provisions for juvenile cells, further demonstrating Government’s commitment to protecting children’s rights.

The UNICEF Ghana Representative expressed appreciation for the Minister’s efforts and assured him of continued support and collaboration to promote child welfare and protection in Ghana.
