Bernard Okoe-Boye is the former Minister of Health
The former Minister of Health, Bernard Okoe-Boye, has expressed confidence and optimism that the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) can regain its appeal and secure victory in the 2028 presidential elections.
He, however, emphasised that this can only be achieved if the party is willing to learn a few lessons from their opponents, the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), and is prepared to acknowledge its mistakes, admit to errors made during its time in governance, and subsequently reform its behavior.
Speaking on Peace FM on Thursday, May 8, 2025, Okoe-Boye referenced the NDC’s experience in 2016, noting how, after suffering a major defeat, many Ghanaians had written the party off, with some even vowing it would never return to power.
However, he acknowledged that the NDC managed to reorganise, rebuild its image, and ultimately regain power, a lesson he believes the NPP should learn from.
“The way they (NDC) changed their behavior, it’s the same way if NPP we admit and accept our mistakes, change our behavior and adapt like Mahama did, Ghanaians will vote us back into power,” he stated.
Okoe-Boye, in assessing the ruling government, stated that some of the promises made by the NDC during the electioneering period were politically motivated and not grounded in realistic plans.
He specifically pointed to the fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, predicting that the situation could either worsen or fail to produce any meaningful results.
“Some of the promises were just for politics. I’m not a prophet of doom but I’m predicting that some of the promises Mahama made, in just four years, its either they will remain the same or even become worse,” he continued.
Okoe-Boye condemned the portrayal of illegal mining activities as being predominantly associated with members of the NPP, which he added wasn’t so.
“Why did Ghanaians sit and allow people to create an impression that the illegal mining menace were being done by only NPP members.”
