The Ghana Police Service has commenced investigations into the alleged assault of Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, by a police officer during a protest against the potential removal of the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, on Monday, May 5.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, May 5, 2025, Afenyo-Markin recounted the incident, alleging that one Constable Forson struck him forcefully on the chest while he approached the barricade to present a petition as part of the demonstration.
Addressing journalists at the Police Headquarters in Accra on May 6, Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, stated that the service had written to the Speaker of Parliament for the relevant information to facilitate investigations.
“About the Hon. Afenyo-Markin’s case, I believe that we all saw their videos on social media about an altercation or confrontation that happened during the demonstration. We captured it on our lenses as well, and so, it’s a matter of investigation.
“If it’s an assault, tussle, confrontation, or whatever it is, it has to be investigated. We’ve commenced the investigations. We have written to the Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, because he’s the sitting Member of Parliament.
“We have identified the Police Officers who were on duty at the scene. We have taken statements. We’ll definitely update you in due course,” DCOP, Lydia Yaako Donkor said.
