The Acting Deputy CEO (Operations) of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), Professor Michael Ayamga-Adongo, has described President John Dramani Mahama’s firm stance on asset declaration as a necessary move to enhance transparency and fight corruption in public office.

According to him, the president’s directive is in line with constitutional principles and must be seen as a proactive governance tool rather than a punitive measure.

“Mahama giving a deadline to his appointees to declare their assets is not being harsh but rather promoting transparency and preventing corruption,” Professor Ayamga stated.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on May 6, 2025, and monitored by GhanaWeb, he stated that the appointees should not hesitate to comply with basic accountability standards.

“You know what you lobbied for, so why should it be difficult for you to declare your assets?” he asked.

Professor Ayamga-Adongo, however, said President Mahama’s deadline significantly tightens the timeline, signaling his administration’s commitment to restoring public trust.

He described the move as timely, noting that corruption cannot be addressed without institutional discipline.

“Transparency doesn’t work when it’s optional. It must be enforced. If public officials know they will be held accountable from day one, it changes how they operate,” he said.
