Avoid using public office for personal gain

President John Dramani Mahama has cautioned his appointees against using public office for personal gain and has requested them to promptly disclose any potential conflicts of interest.

This directive is outlined in the newly issued Code of Conduct on Tuesday, May 6, which is part of the government’s broader initiative to promote professionalism, civility, and ethical governance in public service.

The Code also instructs appointees to safeguard government property, avoid waste, and act with prudence.

Additionally, they are encouraged to express their views frankly and honestly—without fear or favour—in ways that promote national productivity and cohesion.

Appointees are further urged to treat all citizens, colleagues, and stakeholders with respect and dignity.

“Protect government property, prevent waste and prudently apply public resources to achieve developmental goals; refrain from using public office for personal gain and promptly disclose any potential conflict of interest situation that may arise.

“Share his/her opinions frankly and honestly without fear or favour and in a manner that will enhance national productivity and harmony. Treat all citizens, colleagues and stakeholders with dignity,
fairness and respect; perform his/her duties with dedication, diligence and professionalism,” the Code said.
