The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament has approved a request by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) to question two Members of Parliament, Mustapha Yussif and Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, in connection with an ongoing investigation.
The approval follows a formal request from the NIB, communicated through a letter by the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror. The Speaker’s decision is seen as a significant move to balance national security concerns with the constitutional privileges granted to lawmakers.
According to the letter, Parliament has granted general approval for the two MPs to appear before NIB officials on Monday, April 7, 2025, at 10:00 AM. The meeting is scheduled to take place at the Sir Emmanuel Charles Quist Conference Room within the Parliament complex.
In an effort to uphold due process and protect the rights of the MPs, the Speaker has mandated that both Mustapha Yussif and A Plus be accompanied by their legal representatives during the session.
This development marks a notable moment in Ghana’s democratic process, emphasizing Parliament’s willingness to cooperate with security agencies while maintaining oversight of its members’ constitutional protections.
The nature of the investigation remains undisclosed, and no official statement has yet been made by the NIB regarding the specifics of the case.
Observers say the Speaker’s decision sets a precedent for future interactions between the legislature and national security agencies, reinforcing the importance of accountability without compromising parliamentary independence.
