0.1% can’t speak for GBA – Appiah Danquah

Private legal practitioner and spokesperson for the Movement for Change, Andrew Appiah-Danquah, has criticised the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) over its recent statement opposing the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, calling the move both “preposterous” and unrepresentative of the wider legal community.

Speaking on the matter on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, May 3, Appiah-Danquah questioned the legitimacy of the GBA’s position, arguing that it does not reflect the views of the majority of its members.

“It’s preposterous and very dangerous for 0.1% of a group to go and take a decision and go and say that it is our decision. I am not part of that decision,” he said.

He acknowledged an earlier statement issued by the GBA, which he said was more balanced and appropriate, particularly in its call to uphold the rule of law and promote transparency—principles he fully supports.

“They came out with an earlier decision which I felt was perfect. A call to abide by the rule of law is okay because that’s all of our hope—that we fashion politics or political culture that guarantees us rule of law. The call for transparency is one that I agree with,” he noted.

However, Appiah-Danquah emphasised that any new stance taken by a small, unrepresentative group within the association cannot be imposed as the collective voice of all members.

“But without going into the merit of what they are saying I think it is preposterous for 0.1% to go and take a decision and say that we will all be bound by it,” he said.
