P.K Sarpong Expresses Shóck as Mahama Orders Ghanaian Presidential Jet To Show Only Ghanaian Movies

Political commentator and vocal NPP supporter P.K. Sarpong has taken aim at President John Mahama over a new directive involving the presidential aircraft. Mahama recently announced that only Ghanaian films will be shown onboard the presidential jet once it becomes operational again. Sarpong denounced the directive as pointless and absurd, questioning its value to the average citizen.

Writing on Facebook on May 1, 2025, Sarpong criticized the decision, calling it a display of excessive populism. He mocked the initiative, asking how showing Ghanaian movies on the presidential plane—used by very few people—could possibly benefit the general public. “Is this a joke? Mahama is making a comedy out of the presidency. Who benefits from watching Ghanaian films on a jet we don’t board? This is laughable populism,” he remarked.

The statement followed the unveiling of the “Black Star Experience,” a cultural initiative launched by Mahama to promote Ghana’s creative industries and tourism. As part of this effort, the President announced the exclusive screening of local content on the presidential aircraft to reflect national pride and identity.

However, critics like Sarpong argue that the initiative is misplaced, given the country’s ongoing economic challenges. They believe the use of a government asset like the presidential jet for symbolic gestures does little to address pressing public concerns.

The directive has sparked mixed reactions—some see it as a harmless promotion of culture, while others view it as another example of performative politics that fails to address the real issues affecting Ghanaians.
