NPP, others set for May 5 protest over Chief Justice’s suspension

The New Patriotic Party (NPP), together with four other political parties, has announced that preparations are complete for a planned demonstration on May 5 against President John Mahama’s decision to suspend Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkonoo.

The participating parties have strongly condemned the suspension, describing it as a direct assault on the independence of the judiciary.

Speaking to Citi News at the Accra Regional Police Headquarters, the NPP’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, confirmed that all logistical and procedural arrangements for the protest have been finalized.

“We have already notified the police, and they have invited us for some deliberations. It was all peaceful and we agreed on the roadmap. We also agreed on some other things. So, we can say that all is set for the ‘Save the Judiciary Demo’.

“The judiciary is under political attack, and for all of us, it is our course. As a political party, we all have one agenda to ensure that we do not wickedly attack the judiciary. We are saying that the suspension of the chief justice must be revoked,” he stated.
