Kwesi Botchwey, a lawyer and member of the NPP Communications Team, has raised concerns over the ongoing effort to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, warning that it could set a dangerous precedent for Ghana’s democracy as per reports from Ghana Web.

Speaking on Asaase Radio’s The Forum, Botchwey emphasized the political risks involved, linking the move to previous statements from opposition leaders.

He stated that the drive to remove the Chief Justice could undermine the judiciary’s independence.

“This issue cannot be divorced from the NDC’s commitment to removing Madam Torkornoo,” Botchwey said, pointing to the political undertones surrounding the matter.

He expressed fears that politicizing the judiciary would encourage future administrations to target judicial members for political reasons, creating an unstable environment for justice.

Botchwey also urged the nation’s top judges to speak out and defend the judiciary’s autonomy. “I am calling on our revered justices to come out and condemn or call for due process,” he added, highlighting the importance of upholding the rule of law.

He further cautioned that if the current effort succeeds, it could lead to retaliatory actions in the future.

“If this action succeeds, any CJ could be removed when another party comes into power,” Botchwey warned, stressing the long-term consequences for Ghana’s democratic system.
