Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has stated that the unity the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is currently seeking will only be achieved if the party grants amnesty to Alan Kyerematen and Paul Afoko.
Following the party’s primaries to elect a flagbearer for the 2024 elections, former Trade Minister and leading NPP member, Alan Kyerematen, broke away to form an apolitical movement, the Movement for Change, to contest the 2024 general election as an independent candidate.
Paul Afoko, on the other hand, was indefinitely suspended in 2015 while serving as the party’s Chairman. He was accused by party supporters of undermining Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s chances of winning the 2016 elections.
Speaking at the Takoradi Technical University Auditorium during the start of the NPP’s nationwide Thank You tour, Kennedy Agyapong emphasized the need for genuine reconciliation within the party.
“With reorganisation and unity, we were able to win power again. So, I am pleading with you, let us stop the public display of support for one candidate or the other. If we want to unite again as a party, I stand before the national executives to say that they should extend amnesty to Paul Afoko, Alan Kyerematen, and anybody who have been suspended, for them to come back.
“When we are able to do that it will serve us well. All the persons we have suspended have relatives and friends who can augment our votes as a party,” he stated.
