We expect doctors to resume work soon

Dr. Salifu Alhassan Tiah, Director of Pharmacy and Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), has expressed hope that striking doctors at the facility will soon return to work and resume emergency and outpatient services.

Doctors at TTH began an indefinite suspension of these critical services on April 23, citing a hostile work environment, a shortage of essential medical supplies, and what they described as demeaning treatment by top government officials.

The action followed an emergency general assembly convened by the Doctors’ Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital (DATTH).

The strike was triggered by a heated exchange during a visit by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh on April 22, which reportedly heightened tensions between the Minister and medical personnel.

In response, the doctors have demanded unqualified apologies from both the Health Minister and the Tamale North MP, Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini. These apologies, they insist, must be directed to Dr. Valentine Akwulpwa, the entire medical staff, and especially the Accident and Emergency Department team.

Speaking to journalists after a meeting with the association, Dr. Tiah said, “We met the leadership of the association of doctors of TTH, who narrated to us the circumstances that led to the strike.

“They explained that the officer who was involved in the altercation is traumatised. We pleaded with them, we’re hopeful that latest by Thursday, April 23, or tomorrow, Thursday, April 24, we will hear good news that they have called off the strike.”

Hospital authorities say they remain engaged with all parties involved to help restore services and ensure a peaceful working environment.
