You have no basis for staying in that position

Yaw Asani Tano, the National Organiser of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), has called for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo from office.

According to him, the Chief Justice, during the previous government’s administration, failed to uphold the neutrality expected of her role within the judicial system.

He, therefore, believes her removal is justified.

He further argued that even if her removal sets a precedent for future governments to follow a similar trend, it should not be considered problematic.

“When it comes to the removal of Torkornoo, she has to go. She has no basis for staying in that position, and I have no problem if that becomes the new norm.

“If another government comes into power and decides to remove the Chief Justice or the Electoral Commissioner, so be it, the NPP has already set that precedent.

“What the Chief Justice remained aloof and watched during her tenure warrants her removal. Without that, the fight against crime and corruption cannot be achieved,” he stated during a panel discussion on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo on April 9, 2025.

Meanwhile, Torkornoo has submitted her official response to the petitions seeking her removal from office, as of Monday, April 7, 2025.

Justice Torkornoo submitted her response to President John Dramani Mahama and the Council of State before the expiration of the 10-day deadline set by the president after the petitions were filed.

Report indicates that with her response now submitted, the Council of State will commence a review process to determine whether a prima facie case exists to warrant further proceedings.

President Mahama had given Justice Torkornoo 10 working days to respond to the three separate petitions calling for her removal.

In a letter addressed to President Mahama on March 27, 2025, the Chief Justice requested copies of the petitions and asked for at least seven days to respond, in line with due process requirements.
