Ghanaian artist Jacob Teye is making waves in the art and sustainability world by transforming discarded copper into stunning, meaningful works of art.
Blending creativity with environmental consciousness, Teye has earned a reputation as a “sustainability artist”, using his craft to highlight the importance of recycling and eco-friendly innovation.
Based in Accra, Teye sources copper wires and scrap metal from electronic waste, repurposing them into sculptures and intricate installations. His artwork not only showcases artistic excellence but also serves as a commentary on waste management and sustainable development in Ghana and beyond.
In an interview with Mawuli Ahorlumegah on BizTech, Teye explained that his passion lies in creating beauty from what society throws away, adding that copper’s flexibility and durability make it ideal for conveying both strength and fragility in his pieces.
Jacob Teye’s work has been exhibited locally and internationally, gaining recognition for its unique fusion of environmental advocacy and cultural expression.
“As Ghana grapples with the environmental consequences of electronic waste, we have to strive and prove that innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand,” Teye said.
Through his art, Teye said he hopes to inspire a new generation to see value in discarded materials—and to rethink what we consider “waste.”
