Former National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Odododiodio, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has shared details of his traumatic experience during the tenure of former President Akufo-Addo’s administration in 2020 as reported by Ghana Web.
Vanderpuye’s recount comes amid tensions following the April 9, 2025, raid on the residence of Assin South MP, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour.
The NPP has condemned the incident in which National Intelligence Bureau operatives, armed with AK-47 rifles, tried to arrest Fordjour.
However, Vanderpuye argued that his experience under the NPP government was far more severe.
Speaking on Channel1 TV, he recalled being handcuffed and placed in the boot of a car on December 7, 2020, despite being a sitting MP.
He was subsequently dumped at the Regional Police Command, where he lost consciousness for several hours. “I was handcuffed and put in the boot of a car… I collapsed, I don’t know what happened for seven hours,” he said.
Vanderpuye also highlighted the arrest of 52 of his party officials and the tragic killing of his polling agent, emphasizing that many responsible for the violence remain free.
Regarding the recent events surrounding Fordjour’s attempted arrest, Vanderpuye dismissed the uproar as unnecessary drama.
He stressed that MPs could be arrested when not performing their official duties and that any invitations through the Speaker only applied when Parliament was in session.
“It is only a privilege, and that privilege is exercised through the Speaker,” he stated, critiquing the political theater unfolding around the incident.
