A former parliamentary candidate for the Oforikrom constituency, Henry Osei Akoto, has taken a swipe at those suggesting that the Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, cannot be arrested over recent allegations of cocaine smuggling and money laundering.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, April 10, 2025, Osei Akoto, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), argued that while ordinary Ghanaians can be arrested by security authorities when accused of wrongdoing, Members of Parliament should not be treated any differently.

He added that the Assin South legislator has embarrassed himself with baseless allegations and must be treated like any other Ghanaian.

“They can arrest an ordinary Ghanaian, but for an MP, they should send him an invitation? Does being an MP make you a special Ghanaian? Where from this logic? Arrest him!

“Ntim Fordjour doesn’t deserve any special treatment for his disgraceful and dishonourable act!” he wrote.

Background

Rev John Ntim Fordjour, MP for Assin South and the Minority’s Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee, alleged in a press conference on April 1, 2025, that two aircraft, an air ambulance and a private jet, might have been involved in drug trafficking or money laundering.

He claimed that one of the aircraft, AirMED flight L823AM, landed in Ghana on March 20 and stayed for five days without any record of transporting a patient.

Following these allegations, President John Dramani Mahama directed all security agencies to “immediately and fully collaborate with the honourable Member of Parliament so he provides all necessary information to investigate the allegations and take all action necessary to expose any drug dealing.”

President Mahama also reaffirmed that Ghana maintains a zero-tolerance policy on drug trafficking and will not allow the country to be used as a transit or destination for illicit drugs.

On Wednesday, April 9, 2025, National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) officials visited Rev Ntim Fordjour’s residence to pick him up for questioning regarding his claims.

However, they left without arresting him following the intervention of key figures in the New Patriotic Party, including Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
