Former Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has jumped to the defence of Felix Kwakye-Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications amidst the continuing controversy surrounding allegation of unusual planes at Kotoka International Airport connected to drug trafficking and money laundering.

The minister has been criticised for peddling falsehood in putting out what he claims are the facts of the matter.

But Oppong Nkrumah stressed that Kwakye-Ofosu did not falsify the information, but merely relayed a briefing that proved to be inaccurate in what seems to be an act of solidarity.

“Look at this Air Med matter, he came out with an explanation that the flight was on its way to I think Luanda and that the people were for crew rest and that they had a problem when they came. Now it is turning out that the flight never went to Luanda. I don’t think he cooked up that story. I believe it was a brief he was given. I will defend my brother Felix any day that he is not a liar, and that he is coming to sit there and lie. It is the information that he was given, and he has put out that information and that information is not correct,” Oppong Nkrumah stated in an interview on Joy Prime.

Asked whether there was not the need for the minister to do due diligence before coming public on the matter, Oppong Nkrumah who is also the Member of Parliament for Ofoasi/Ayirebi responded: “But if you are doing due diligence and the person decides to lie to you, what are you going to do?

Tensions are still high over the accusations, which were first brought up by Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, the MP for Assin South.

There has been political uproar over the allegations, with authorities disputing any misconduct and critics accusing the administration of a potential cover-up.

Kwakye-Ofosu’s position as a government spokesperson puts him in a challenging situation that can easily result in public misconception, Oppong Nkrumah acknowledged while admitting the delicate nature of the subject.
