Torkornoo’s Written Response to Removal Petitions Sparks Constitutional Debate

Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo has formally submitted her written response to the petitions requesting her removal, following a directive from President John Dramani Mahama.

The petitions, which are not yet fully public, are rooted in allegations related to her leadership and administrative decisions.

Torkornoo’s submission, which was filed within the required 10-day period, was also sent to the Council of State as per constitutional protocols.

This marks the first time in recent history that a sitting Chief Justice has been formally petitioned for removal under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, an issue that has triggered significant discussions within legal and political circles.

The constitutional process requires the President to consult the Council of State, and if warranted, form a committee to investigate the claims. As Torkornoo’s response is reviewed, the legal community is closely watching the proceedings.

With her distinguished judicial career, Torkornoo is expected to defend her actions and address the allegations thoroughly. The outcome of this process may have far-reaching effects on the independence and credibility of the judiciary.
