‘I hope the case is discontinued’ – Paul Afoko

Former NPP National Chairman Paul Afoko has stated that he wishes for the ongoing trial of Gregory Afoko to be discontinued after running for over a decade.

Reacting to the state of Gregory Afoko’s wellbeing in a video shared on 3 News’ X page on April 8, 2025, he noted that the key suspect in the murder case of the late Adams Mahama is better cared for at home.

“Isn’t it obvious that being in prison custody is different from being at home? It’s obvious. He’s at home with his family. He is being well taken care of at home. So, he is better off than being in prison for 10 years. I think that’s the least I can say.”

When asked if he hoped for a discontinuation of the case, given that the prosecution disclosed that the Attorney General is still considering what to do, he replied, “Well, who wouldn’t hope that? Who wouldn’t hope to have justice done? I mean, 10 years? Even if he had been convicted of manslaughter, he would have finished his sentence and come home… So for a crime he never committed?

“Come on… You have asked the obvious question. I hope that the case is discontinued. We pray that justice is done expeditiously.”

Background

Gregory Afoko was granted a GH₵500k bail after nearly a decade on remand on February 21, 2025. A key suspect in the 2015 murder of former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Adams Mahama, Afoko has been granted bail by the High Court in Accra.

Afoko filed a fresh bail application before the Accra High Court on February 17, marking the third time the accused has sought bail during the nine-year criminal trial.

Arrested in 2015, Afoko is accused of conspiring with others to assassinate Mahama in a brutal acid attack outside his Bolgatanga home. The trial commenced in 2019 and concluded in 2023.

However, the jury returned a hung verdict on both counts of murder and conspiracy to commit murder against Gregory Afoko, leading the court to order a retrial. Afoko was subsequently re-arrested after the proceedings and denied bail.
