President John Dramani Mahama’s 10-day deadline to Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, to respond to the three separate petitions brought against her ends on Monday, April 7, 2025.

This follows a letter dated March 28, 2025, in which the president through his executive secretary, Dr Callistus Mahama directed Gertrude Torkornoo to submit a preliminary response to three separate petitions demanding her removal from office.

The Chief Justice had on March 27, 2025, requested copies of the petitions alleging abuse of office, misconduct and abuse of power.

Background

On March 25, 2025, President Mahama began consultations with the Council of State following the submission of three petitions seeking the removal of the Chief Justice, Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo.

According to a statement from Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the three petitions were forwarded to the Council of State, in line with the constitutional process outlined in Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.

While details of the petitions remain undisclosed, this development signals the beginning of a formal process that could lead to significant changes within Ghana’s judicial system.
