Ghana Athletics (GA) has suspended coaches Wisdom Loh and Jeffrey Nkrumah with immediate effect following serious allegations of abuse and exploitation of athletes, including minors. The governing body has barred the duo from all GA-related activities, both domestically and internationally, pending a full investigation.
In a press release issued March 26, GA cited violations of the World Athletics Integrity Code of Conduct (Article 3.3.17), accusing Loh and Nkrumah of undermining the authority of the federation and engaging in actions that “bring disrepute” to the sport. The investigation will also probe whether their conduct facilitated the exploitation of Ghanaian athletes, both locally and abroad.
The GA emphasized its commitment to safeguarding athletes, aligning with World Athletics’ policies against exploitation and abuse. “These allegations, particularly those involving minors, are shocking and embarrassing,” the statement read. One case, described as bordering on criminality, has been escalated to World Athletics for further guidance.
Recent reports have highlighted a troubling pattern of abuse in school athletics programs, with some victims allegedly left traumatized or even pregnant. The GA vowed to address these systemic issues, stating, “Safeguarding violations breach national and international laws, as well as the human rights of athletes. We will ensure accountability.”
The federation warned athletes, coaches, and officials against collaborating with the suspended individuals during the investigation, stating that such interactions could result in sanctions, including bans from GA events.
GA President Bawah Fuseini reiterated the organization’s dedication to ethical standards: “Our priority is protecting athletes and restoring trust in Ghanaian athletics. We will not tolerate actions that harm our athletes or tarnish the sport’s integrity.”
