Amoakohene urges vigilance as Ashanti Region receives 110,000 Ghana Cards to clear backlog

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has announced the allocation of over 110,000 blank Ghana Cards to the region, aimed at addressing a significant backlog of pending applications.

In a Facebook post on Friday, 4 April, Dr Amoakohene described the development as a “major boost” to the operations of the National Identification Authority (NIA) in the region, which has been grappling with approximately 80,000 unresolved Ghana Card applications.

The Minister disclosed this following a meeting with the Ashanti Regional Head of the NIA and his team, commending the leadership of the Authority’s Executive Secretary, Yayra Koku, for facilitating the distribution from the Head Office.

“We remain committed to supporting the NIA in its vital role of ensuring that only eligible Ghanaians are duly registered, and that no one is left behind,” he stated.

Beyond logistics, Dr Amoakohene raised concern over the growing issue of non-Ghanaians allegedly acquiring Ghana Cards with the help of “unscrupulous individuals.” He warned that such practices threaten the integrity of the national database and called for stricter vetting and community vigilance.

“This practice undermines the integrity of our national database and must be tackled head-on,” he added.

The Ghana Card has become a central document for identification and access to various public services, and officials have been under pressure to expand coverage and resolve application bottlenecks across the country.
