Pre-tertiary Teachers To Haruna Iddrisu

The pre-tertiary teacher unions in Ghana have urged the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, to address the frustrations teachers are facing due to the Public Services Commission (PSC). They have given him a deadline of April 30th, 2025, to resolve the issues raised.

A press statement signed by GNAT, NAGRAT, and CCT-GH reads:

“We refer to the meeting we had with the PSC in early 2024, where they informed us of the Commission’s intention to reintroduce the Human Resource Management Information System (HRMIS). We raised strong objections, citing the issues it caused in the past, and made it clear that we would not support its implementation.

We also warned that if the PSC disregarded our stance and moved forward with implementing HRMIS, they would be held responsible for any negative consequences.”

The Teacher Unions expressed that the HRMIS implementation has led to numerous problems for teachers, leaving them frustrated, angry, and demoralized. Some of the key issues include:

“i. Salary Activation:

Since the HRMIS was implemented, many teachers have faced significant delays in activating their salaries, with some having to wait between four (4) to twelve (12) months, as of December 2024.

ii. Promotion:

Teachers who were promoted after passing the 2024 aptitude test have yet to be placed on the correct salary scales, which is both upsetting and concerning.

iii. Upgrading (Returnees from further studies):

Teachers who pursued further studies, some at their own expense, have not been upgraded upon their return to the service after completing their studies.

iv. Lower Rank Promotion:

Many teachers below the rank of Principal Superintendent who successfully passed their last promotion exercise are still waiting to be upgraded and placed in the correct ranks.”

The teacher unions have called for immediate action to resolve these issues by April 30th, 2025, to prevent further frustration and anger among teachers.
