Meet 7 former NSMQ contestants who are excelling in STEM careers

The National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) is an annual science and mathematics content-based national level quiz competition for senior high schools in Ghana.

Over the years, the quiz has served as an avenue to groom many contestants into successful individuals, who continue to make strides in various fields, excelling in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Here, GhanaWeb takes a look at some remarkable contestants who have gone on to achieve success in their respective careers, demonstrating that the NSMQ serves as a solid foundation for young enterprising students

Rachel Amaning Kwarteng 

Rachel Amaning Kwarteng, a former student of Aburi Girls’ Senior High School, who was a NSMQ 2017 contestant, graduated from the University of Ghana Medical School (UGMS) in 2023.

Similarly, Jochebed Adwoa Sutherland, another female and a fellow 2017 contestant and alumna of Holy Child Senior High School, has also completed medical school. During the University of Ghana Vice-Chancellor’s Ceremony in Honour of Award Winners for the 2022/23 Academic Year, she received impressive 12 awards, showcasing her exceptional achievements and hard work.

The awards included, Best Student in Community Health, Best Female Student in Ophthalmology, Best Student in Anaesthesia, Best MB ChB Final Part II Best Student, Best All-Round Student Throughout the Course, Best in Clinical Surgery, Best in Medical Microbiology, Overall Best Student in Surgery, Overall Best Student in Community Diagnosis, Overall Best Student in Opthalmology and Best Student in Trauma and Orthopaedics.

Additionally, three contestants of the St Augustine’s College who secured victory over Adisadel College, and St. Thomas Aquinas School, in 2017, have graduated from medical school. Wonder Sarfo-Ansah, graduated from the University of Ghana Medical School, while Daniel Osei Badu and Kofi Konadu Boakye graduated from the KNUST Medical School.

Anthony Papa Eliason, another remarkable contestant in 2019, who represented St. Augustine’s College, recently graduated from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, (KNUST) with First Class Honours in Electrical Engineering.

The story of these former contestants serve as an aspiration for students in SHS to embrace STEM education and pursue excellence.

Their achievements demonstrate how the NSMQ may be serving as a valuable springboard for the SHS students who aspire to take up careers in STEM.
